The ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran has entered its 12th day, raising serious concerns across the Middle East and beyond. The war began on February 28 after joint US–Israeli strikes targeted several sites inside Iran. Since then, the conflict has expanded across the region with retaliatory attacks, military operations, and rising diplomatic tensions.
Amid the escalating situation, India confirmed casualties involving its citizens working on merchant vessels in the region.
US–Israel–Iran War : Two Indians Dead, One Missing After Ship Attacks
India’s Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that two Indian nationals have been killed and one remains missing after merchant vessels came under attack in the Gulf region.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the casualties occurred while the individuals were working aboard commercial ships operating in conflict-affected waters.
The ministry also reported that several other Indian nationals in the Gulf Cooperation Council region have been injured in separate incidents and are currently receiving medical treatment. Indian diplomatic missions are maintaining contact with them and monitoring their condition.
In a separate incident near Dubai International Airport, falling drones injured four people, including one Indian national. Local authorities said the injuries were not life-threatening and the individual is receiving treatment in hospital.
War Intensifies as Strikes Continue
According to the United States Central Command, the joint military campaign against Iran has struck more than 5,000 targets since the start of the conflict.
The US military also stated that over 50 Iranian naval vessels have been damaged or destroyed, significantly weakening Iran’s maritime capabilities.
US President Donald Trump described the military campaign as one of the most extensive operations in recent years. Speaking to reporters, he said the strikes have targeted Iran’s missile systems, naval infrastructure, and drone facilities.
However, the US government has also said that some incidents linked to the war remain under investigation.
US–Israel–Iran War School Explosion Controversy in Iran
One of the most controversial incidents during the conflict occurred in the southern Iranian city of Minab on the first day of the war.
Iranian officials said an explosion near an elementary school killed more than 150 people, many of them children, and accused the US and Israel of being responsible.
Washington rejected the accusation and said the matter is under investigation. Reports by The New York Times said video footage appears to show a Tomahawk cruise missile striking a structure near the school.
The missile is widely known to be operated by the US military, although officials say the circumstances surrounding the incident are still being examined.
Leadership Changes in Iran
During the early phase of the conflict, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed after his residence in Tehran was targeted.
Following his death, Iran appointed Mojtaba Khamenei, his son, as the country’s new supreme leader.
Iranian officials later confirmed that Mojtaba Khamenei was lightly injured during the conflict but remains active in his leadership role.
For a brief period after the death of Ali Khamenei, the country was governed by a three-member leadership body that included Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
Iran’s Retaliation and Regional Escalation
Iran has responded to the strikes by targeting Israeli positions and locations linked to US forces in the region.
Iranian authorities said missile attacks were carried out against US military bases in Kuwait and Bahrain, while additional strikes targeted Israeli military facilities, including intelligence infrastructure and naval bases.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps warned that Iran would continue launching attacks as part of what it described as a policy of “continuous strikes”.
At the same time, Iran stated that it does not intend to enter into direct conflict with other Gulf nations unless they participate in military operations against it.
Shipping Attacks and Maritime Security Concerns
The war has also affected global shipping routes. A cargo vessel was struck by projectiles in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil transit routes.
According to Thailand’s transport ministry, 20 crew members were rescued, while three crew members remain missing after an explosion triggered a fire in the ship’s engine compartment.
Authorities said the crew abandoned the vessel and were later rescued by the Omani Navy.
Global Concerns Over Oil Supply
The escalating conflict has also impacted global energy markets. Several countries are now considering releasing strategic oil reserves to stabilize prices.
Germany’s economy and energy minister Katherina Reiche confirmed that Germany will release part of its oil reserves following a request from the International Energy Agency.
The move is intended to ease pressure on global oil prices as the war continues to disrupt energy markets.
US–Israel–Iran War India Monitoring Situation Closely
India has been closely monitoring developments in the region, especially given the large number of Indian citizens living and working in Gulf countries.
US–Israel–Iran War India’s external affairs minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar has held discussions with foreign leaders, including Russia’s Sergey Lavrov, to assess the situation and explore diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions.
Meanwhile, Indian students studying in Iran have begun arranging safe exits through neighboring countries such as Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the government is working to ensure the safety of Indian citizens in the region and that Indian missions are providing round-the-clock assistance.
US–Israel–Iran War Humanitarian Concerns Grow
The conflict has also triggered humanitarian concerns across the region. Several air strikes have reportedly hit residential areas in different parts of Iran and Lebanon, causing casualties.
Global leaders and religious figures have appealed for peace. Pope Leo XIV expressed sorrow over the loss of civilian lives and urged an immediate end to hostilities.
